“The tone is very playful and glamorous,” says Perry. What’s even more enticing, especially for anyone toying with the idea of going red: “It’s flirting with the redhead phenomenon without going copper, which has been such a thing.” It’s much lower maintenance, too. “The beauty of this versus a true redhead is this lasts a bit longer, stains the hair more, and doesn’t oxidize as fast,” says Perry. “It lasts up to three months!”
When requesting “chocolate cherry” at the salon, a client with a deep brunette base can expect to receive a series of red-violet glosses fine-tuned to what will get the hair to that perfect tinge of crimson, says Perry. And to maintain the color at home, she recommends carefully cocktailing red- and brunette-based color-depositing shampoo and conditioner (with more of the latter, to ensure it doesn’t skew too red) to keep the color vibrant and vivid. Living at the sweet spot between easy to care for and highly impactful, “chocolate cherry” strands are bound to be everywhere in the fall season ahead.
