We’re always looking for ways to stream music for less and Spotify is no exception. If you’re looking for a cheaper Spotify monthly cost, you’ve come to the right place…
Whether you’re an avid Taylor Swift fan or a podcast fanatic, Spotify has it all but comes at a hefty (ish) monthly cost. All of the streaming services and subscriptions you pay for add up to a much higher monthly cost, so we think it’s important to get a great deal where you can.
After all, you don’t want to be missing out on your Spotify Wrapped stats every year.
We’ve put together a list of tips and tricks you can use to get Spotify cheaper and… for free!
How much is Spotify Premium?
Here are the associated costs with Spotify Premium:
- Spotify Premium: £9.99 per month for 1 person
- Spotify Premium Student: £5.99 per month for 1 person
- Spotify Premium Duo: £13.99 per month for 2 people
- Spotify Premium Family Sharing: £16.99 per month for up to 6 people.
How to get free and cheap Spotify
Here’s how you can get Spotify for less:
Make the most of Spotify’s free trials
Before purchasing a Spotify subscription, we highly recommend using up all of the Spotify free trials you can!
We’ve previously seen Microsoft Rewards also offering three months of free Spotify. It’s worth checking out our deals section regularly, which we’ll update when we find similar deals.
Listen to the ads and you’ll get Spotify for free
If you’re not too fussed about adverts, this is the best way to enjoy Spotify for free (forever). However, you can only listen to albums and playlists on shuffle and you’ll just be able to skip six songs per hour.
This may not be the best plan for you if you tend to travel a lot without internet access as you won’t be able to download music.
The good news for podcast listeners is that you’ll be able to download podcasts to listen to them offline. So if you listen to more podcasts than music and don’t mind a shuffled album, you may not have to purchase Spotify Premium at all!
Use your Spotify student discount
Using your Spotify student discount will knock a good chunk off your monthly bill.
A regular Spotify account will cost one user £9.99 a month. But, if you verify yourself as a student, you can get the exact same service for just £5.99, which is a massive £48 saving over the course of a year.
Previously too, Spotify had partnered with Headspace where you could redeem a free 12-month trial with the Headspace app by having a Spotify Student subscription, saving a yearly cost of £71.88!
By signing up for a student subscription, you’ll also get your first month of Spotify for free.
Utilise Spotify Family Sharing
If two or more of you (up to six people) live under the same roof, you’ll be eligible for Spotify’s Family Sharing account.
It’s £16.99 a month and gives you all of the same access as a standard Spotify Premium account. Spotify may ask each of you to verify the address you live at, so keep that in mind when you’re signing up.
The cost split between six people makes the monthly cost £2.83 per person, giving each person a yearly saving of £85.92 (if they were on a standard Spotify Premium subscription).
Share Spotify Premium between two people
You can use the Duo Spotify plan if you only need to share between two people. It gives access to all of the Spotify Premium features for just £13.99, working out as around £7 per person per month. To be on a Duo account, you also must live under the same roof.
If you’re thinking of cheating the system and sharing an individual account between two people, we would advise against it. It’s not only against Spotify’s terms, but you’ll also run into issues when two people attempt to listen to Spotify at the same time. Only one person would be able to be online and the other would have to listen to offline downloaded songs.
Buy 12 months of Spotify in advance via gift cards
Previously, we’ve seen great deals on Spotify Premium gift cards which can really cut the cost for you if you’re not eligible for the Family Sharing accounts and have used all of the free trials.
Amazon has previously discounted a one-person 12-month Spotify Premium gift card to £99, saving a decent £20.88 per year (if you were on the standard Spotify Premium subscription).
It’s great to keep an eye out for these deals, as it can save you a good amount. However, you do have to pay upfront for the year which may not be ideal if you’re looking for a lower monthly payment.
Get Spotify for free with a phone contract
If you’re already paying for a Spotify account, you should be able to cancel this so you can get it free through your phone contract.
It is also worth noting that phone contracts that offer free Spotify may be more expensive than if you bought a SIM deal and Spotify account separately.
We’d suggest comparing the cost of the SIM on its own and adding the cost of Spotify (and any other benefits) to it to see if it’s actually cost-effective for you.
Get a free Google Nest Mini with Spotify Premium
Previously, Spotify has given Premium users a free Google Nest Mini (worth £49). If you’re not a Spotify Premium subscriber, you can pay for a month of Spotify Premium, order the free Google Nest Mini and then cancel your Spotify subscription.
So, you’ll get a brand new Google Nest Mini and a month’s worth of music for £5.99 (if you’re on a student plan) or £9.99 if you’re on the regular plan.
Streaming services for music are broadly similar, so it’s worth comparing them all to get the best deal. If the streaming service doesn’t matter to you too much, you could cycle around on a free trial from each platform.
